How artificial intelligence is benefiting manufacturing & retail sector.

With increasing number of manufacturing companies, new uses of Artificial Intelligence in manufacturing industries are being discovered everyday.

The uses of Artificial Intelligence in a manufacturing company can vary from creating better customer support systems to the production of human-robot collaborated machines.

Video analytics using NLP

The use of Natural Language Processing algorithms in manufacturing ensures that the tasks that require repetitive analysis and monitoring gets limited. It is beneficial for the dispersion of man-power as less people are required for monitoring those tasks.

The future of NLP also looks very promising as through advanced algorithms they can be taught to respond to text like humans, this feature can also be used for creating better customer service portals in apps or websites. The integration of NLP into the manufacturing system also helps out the company to make insights based on a customer’s past purchases or behavior. With the help of such insights, the company can map out strategies for marketing their new products and services. Many loopholes in the manufacturing plants which are in many cases not observable from the human eye can also be identified by using NLP integrated cameras. With the help of such cameras, crises can be averted timely without any human intervention.

While managing a large number of medical records, the hospitals often suffer from records mix up which often lead to a doctor prescribing wrong medicines to a patient which results to be quite dangerous at times. This has also made the medical industries move away from paper records to an Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system to prevent such confusion. Although these records are stored safely in the database, there still existed the problem of analysis on text data. This made the medical industries to adopt NLP to gain insights into the health records or other text data

AI powered photography

As phones get more advanced each year, the cameras in those phones have also improved to such an extent that they are now competing with some of the professional cameras. Many of the phone companies use AI algorithms to teach their cameras how to perform during low light, sharp sunlight or other tough conditions.

The Google pixel phones, which are known to have the best phone cameras in this sector rely completely on the software and AI algorithms for their phone’s photography. It was also revealed by the search giant that they used a rig of 64 cameras along with individually programmable 331 LED light sources to enhance their phone’s portrait photography.

Earlier it was believed to have a multi-camera setup for better images, but impressed with Google’s phenomenal camera quality other phone companies have also decided to implement AI in their cameras which is much more cheaper and effective than a multi-camera system.

Predictive maintenance systems

The machinery and equipment maintenance are one of the major expenses faced by the manufacturers which are now decreased to a large extent using predictive maintenance systems which use machine learning and Artificial neural networks to predict the next failure of a part, machine or a system.

The Artificial Intelligence in these systems is taught to use the data from previous maintenance records, sensor data information from within the machines and the weather data to determine when a machine will need to be serviced. These systems have made sure that the operators have right knowledge about their machines and ensures that the machines keep on running at peak performance.

Quality assurance

Due to the increasing product complexity and short deadlines, maintaining high levels of quality is a problem faced by many manufacturers. The use of AI algorithms to notify about the areas where the product quality may face issues proved to be of great help in customer satisfaction in the industry and maintaining high quality of the products. Artificial Intelligence is also used for the identification of bugs and errors in the mobile app or the software development process.

Quality assurance is considered to be just a simple one person task in many manufacturing companies which is not so. For example, in journalism a journalist has to check their sources, follow their companies style and screen for typos and grammatical errors while producing their content. Using AI not only saves manpower but also ensures better quality products.

Robot usage

The increasing use of robots in the industries not only improves the quality of the products but also provides a much safer workplace environment. The fact that robots do not need breaks or shift changes reduces the elapsed time and increases the throughput.

Using robots in manufacturing can also free up the other workers so that their skills can be put to other use. The advancements in AI algorithms play an important role in this field as it enables them to handle more difficult tasks and make decisions based on real-time environmental data. Many manufacturing companies have already started replacing human jobs with robots due to their high efficiency and time saving qualities. AI powered robots are not only used for manufacturing purposes but also in restaurants for serving food and taking orders from the customers in countries like China.

With the industry 4.0 revolution still in its early stages, benefits from AI algorithms can assist be seen in manufacturing companies. Not only AI helps in decreasing cost or helps the manufacturing companies in getting the maximum throughput, it also helps in anticipation of the future market trends by making predictions from noticing the past trends.
